Conni Spiegle shared the sad news with me last night that we had lost Barbara Wheeler Chew. Barbara attended Lizzy Haddon and was a retired Registered Nurse. Fortunately Barbara wrote some heartfelt answers to her Profile Questions on our HMHS website in 2016 before the Reunion. Following is a post from Barbara's daughter Cait on Facebook yesterday followed by her thoughts in her Profile.

***** From Facebook:

𝗧𝗼𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝗮𝘁 𝟭:𝟯𝟲𝗽𝗺, 𝗺𝘆 𝗳𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗹𝘆 𝗹𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗶𝘁𝘀 𝗠𝗮𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗜 𝗹𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗺𝘆 𝗯𝗶𝗴𝗴𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗲𝗿. A woman who lived her life with intentionality, authenticity, compassion, and a true love for people. While I wish I could have had 20 more years with her, her pain was too much for her body to handle.

I will remember her for the rest of my life. I will remember the sweet rose smell of her perfume when you hugged her, the way she made you feel when you walked into a room, the happiness she exuded when she picked up the phone, and how she made everyone feel like they were just the most special person in the world.

Well the reality is that 𝙨𝙝𝙚 𝙬𝙖𝙨 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙢𝙤𝙨𝙩 𝙨𝙥𝙚𝙘𝙞𝙖𝙡 𝙥𝙚𝙧𝙨𝙤𝙣 𝙞𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙬𝙤𝙧𝙡𝙙. You mean the world to us, Granny, and we will never forget you for the rest of our lives. I promise to honor your memory by loving people like you did, by seeing the good in people like you did, and making people feel special like you did. By living, like you did.

We will share more details on her viewing and memorial services as we have them. Thank you from the bottom of my heart to everyone who has been there for our family over the last few weeks and months.

***** From her HMHS Profile:

God has given me a fulfilling life filled with the joy of raising my 2 children, who are now 45 and 43. My older daughter, Carolyn, was diagnosed with a rare form of breast cancer 10 years ago. She continues the battle while raising her adopted son from Guatemala. Prior to her cancer, my daughter was an accomplished Social Worker. My younger daughter, Ginny, has followed in her mother's footsteps for selling. She is a top sales executive for Land Rover. Although I am divorced from my children's father, I cherish time spent with my family, as well as with a group of life long friends that I treasure. I have had several occupations over the years, including leading the largest sales force in the country for a direct sales cosmetic company in the 1970s and 80s. I have sold just about everything to make a living. Actually I love sales but in my late 40's I began studies to pursue a degree in Nursing. I became a Registered Nurse at age 52. My most challenging and rewarding career to date was being the Director of Nursing for a local Assisted Living facility. Last year I had a heart attack that has slowed me down, I miss working but still serve as a State side Missionary to Teamwork Academy in Montego Bay, Jamaica. It is my privilege and passion to make a difference by serving the Lord.

Shortly after Graduation I worked at First Pennsylvania Bank in Philadelphia as their Safe Deposit Department receptionist. Today I continue my Missionary Work for Jamaica, as I learn to live with new parameters from my medical condition.

My eldest grandchild is my grand daughter Caitlyn. She is 26 and currently serving as a Vice Principal in Colorado. I have twin grand daughters, Jessica and Jordan, who are 25. Jessica is a newlywed and professional nanny. Jordan is a Mom to my beautiful great grandchildren. Ella is 15 months while baby Kai is a month old. Jordan is a part-time student studying Occupational Therapy. I have a grandson Cole who is 15. My youngest grandchild is Aiden, who is 11. Aside from Caitlyn, they are all local to South Jersey.

(In response to the Profile Question, What have been the highlights in your life since high school, Barbara wrote:) The birth of my 2 children and watching them become accomplished and successful women in their own rights. Although my achievements in Direct Sales and becoming a Registered Nurse later in life were exciting to me, nothing compares to my extraordinary "out of body experience" 35 years ago. I died and went to Heaven. I saw many people I knew that had passed on, including my precious father who died when I was 5 yrs old. They were all so happy and I desperately wanted to stay, especially to be with my Dad. Prior to this event, I was scared of dying but this was a life-changing experience which left its mark on my future history.

I remember Barbara as one of the happiest, most positive people I have ever known. I loved her smile, it would always light up a room. RIP Barbara, and my heartfelt sympathy to her family and those close to her.

Barbara was an amazing and loving woman which is reflected in her children and grandchildren.

Her 1000 watt smile did light up any room.  I visited with her two weeks ago, even though she was bedridden the smile was still there.

Heartfelt symapathy to her family and her many dear friends.

Obituary for Barbara W. Chew

Barbara W. Chew (nee Wheeler), of Moorestown, formerly of Pennsville, passed away peacefully with her family by her side on May 22, 2021. Born in Camden, NJ to the late Warren Harrah and Dora Alice Wheeler, she was 73 years old.

Barbara was the beloved mother of Carolyn Chew and Teri "Ginny" Chew. She was the cherished grandmother (“Granny”) of Caitlyn Chew (Russell Close), Jordan Dinich (Alex), Jessica Mele (Chris), Cole Schaffer, and Aiden Chew; Great grandmother of Ella Jade, Kai Alexander, Adeline Jane, and Vivienne Bobby; Dear sister of Dennis Wheeler (Kathy), Nancy Midure (Robbie), Cathi Klinger (Ken), Ronald Wheeler, the late Mary Eynon (Frank), and the late William Wheeler (Patti). As the proud and treasured matriarch, she was happiest when surrounded by her family.

Barbara grew up in Haddonfield, NJ and graduated in 1966 from Haddonfield Memorial High School. While raising her 2 daughters, she began a career in sales, initially as a consultant in the cosmetic company Fashion two twenty. She excelled in business and found a passion for sales, ultimately training consultants and becoming a leader in the field. She ultimately found her calling helping people and went back to school at the age of 50 to obtain her RN degree, becoming a nurse.

Barbara loved helping people. She worked as a missionary in Jamaica, and served under privileged areas in Philadelphia. Despite becoming physically disabled, she could be found serving her home made soup and providing clothing to homeless people in need. She was a Christian who loved serving the Lord and adored her family. She would often be found cooking for her family, friends and neighbors.

Granny lived her life with intentionality, authenticity, compassion, and a true love for people. We will all remember the sweet rose smell of her perfume, the way she made you feel when you walked into a room, the happiness she exuded when she picked up the phone, and how she made everyone feel like they were just the most special person in the world. We will miss her and remember her for the rest of our lives.

Relatives and friends are invited to Barbara’s viewing at Givnish of Cinnaminson, 1200 Route 130 N., on Friday evening, May 28th, from 6 pm to 8 pm.
